Until recently, the Nizari Ismailis, representing an important Shi’i Muslim community, were studied and evaluated almost exclusively on the basis of evidence collected (or often fabricated) by their detractors. As a result, a range of myths and misrepresentations circulated, in both Muslim countries and the West, regarding the teachings and practices of this community. A new era has been initiated in Ismaili studies with the recovery and study of a large number of genuine Ismaili textual sources, preserved in the Yemen, Syria, Central Asia and South Asia. From Martyr to Murderer should be read in this context. Drawing on scattered contributions to modern Ismaili studies, this book sheds new light on changing representations of the Nizari Ismailis in European sources of medieval times. The author also produces new interpretations of the well-known medieval European sources. All in all, From Martyr to Murderer represents important contributions to scholarship in the field. It also provides an excellent case study, showing how tales, if repeated long enough, become accepted as facts.
