This book is rather large with small print, so it's definitely PACKED with information. I read somewhere (on some prepper site) that it was a good book to buy. I'd love to be a prepper, but let's face it guys, that's expensive! With this I figure I can be a 'mini-prepper' because I'll only have to have food enough for a hard fall/winter season, and then this book comes in handy after that.There is SO much knowledge in here! I really thought it would be some anecdotal stuff with some handy things thrown in with cute phrases, but seriously! This is like a homesteading manual! It has sections on animals, including wild, domesticated, and livestock; cooking, general, breads, dairy, meats, preserving (includes canning, pickling, distilling); crafts for home, fpm nature, for gifts and decorations; gardening, general, flowers, vegetables, fruits, herbs, and specialty, also landscaping; health for beauty, home remedies, including recipes and elixirs; home DIY's for inside and outside; hardiness zone maps for gardening, pest-proofing, and even buying land in the country. Each major section of the book has darkened side panels, so one can easily navigate the plethora of information. Also, there are lots of illustrations to help those of us who are more visual in our learning abilities.I bought mine from Amazon. Their packaging was terrible! I ordered 2 and both arrived torn on the edges (yes, this is a paperback). However, it was so good and comprehensive, I ordered the survival book in this series (Survival Wisdom and Know-How), and I'll probably order others in the future. I seriously think it's worth it.
This is full of everything you could ever want or need to know about living on a farm, managing a homestead or just old time knowledge. Need to know how to pickle vegetables? It's in there. Want to know how to build a raised garden bed? There are pictures! This has so many diagrams that show you how to do things the old way, before things were massed produced. How to keep chickens, build a coop, rotate your crops for better yields, ward off pests, etc.
Great tips and tricks for becoming self sufficient, and looking forward to learning to make our own soaps and many other household items that will cost a fraction to make instead of buying from mainstream stores. And you know the ingredients that you put into your homemade products, I've been making my own laundry detergent for 5+ years now, and at just $5.00 +/- per 2-gallon batch which lasts us 6-8 weeks, we have saved over $1,200 compared to what it would cost us in store brands laundry detergent. Started making our own yogurt, and for about $5 per 1/2 gallon of plain non-fat yogurt, we will be saving more money in brand yogurts. And the only ingredients are non-fat milk, yogurt starter, and non-fat powdered milk.
There is NO information here that isn't a lot easier to find else where. It's about as large as a Road Atlas but twice as thick. The print is even smaller than what you would find on most road maps. I'd say about equivalent to a size 2 maybe, and that's a big maybe, a size three font and I'm not kidding! I tried to read it through reading glasses WITH a magnifying glass and still it was impossible to read. After less then 5 minutes I had a headache!Definitely NOT a relaxing or enjoyable read. Don't know where these high ratings came from, I suspect they were purchased off of a free lancers site, as most are these days. Spend your money on something else this thing is worthless!
This rating is based more on first impressions than content. It was a gift for my husband and he was thrilled to have it. His only comment was about how small the print is in this huge book. There is truly tons of information in it and the cost is probably lower printed in the way, but even for eyes without visual impairment the print is very small.Hoping to put the content to good use though!
The book is large and the print is small - and there is no wasted space. This book is literally packed with information. Very pleased with this purchase. Lots of info on herbals too so that was a nice bonus. I love the practicality. I have another country living book that I don't really reference at all because it is rambling and disorganized. This book seems spot on.
No, it's not full of articles on geodesic dome building and consciousness raising like the 1970s-80s Whole Earth books, but it is full of even more useful information on digging potatoes, slaughtering hogs, pickling beans, making cheese, raising chickens, mending fences and socks, and most every skill you need to master if you planning on living off the grid. There's a truly amazing amount of information packed into this volume, and even if you never get closer to the soil than a flower box on a city apartment window you'll find information that both useful and just plain fun reading in here.
I think I'm going to love this in the summer when I can sit outside and let the sunshine help my old tired eyes read it. This is a great know-how book but the text is just to small for me. I would have paid a little more to get bigger text. This book is packed full of useful information and ideas and would be a great help to anyone thinking of starting a homestead or small mini-farm.
