Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of December 2018: Thrillers are mostly populated with damaged crusaders, loose cannons, or lone wolves fighting crime single-handedly. Like literary Jenga, Louise Penny removes most of these testosterone-drenched tropes without sacrificing the high stakes that propel a thriller forward. In Kingdom of the Blind Chief Inspector Gamache is on the ropes professionally as a shipment of opioids that escaped him in an earlier book makes its way to the streets of Montreal. Heads will roll, and Gamache’s is top of the list, with pressure being applied to his son-in-law and second-in-command Jean-Guy to work the guillotine. Meanwhile back in Three Pines, Gamache, Myrna, and a neighboring man are informed that they’ve been named executors to the estate of a woman who had given herself the delusionary title of Baroness. It’s quizzical until it turns deadly and a beneficiary is found dead in the woman’s decrepit house. Reading Penny’s deceptively loose plots, the reader gets distracted by the priest-like Gamache marshaling his flock, personal and professional, attuned to any strays he may need to take under his protective wing. It isn’t until Penny pulls the final string that the plot goes taut, the smoke and mirrors fall away, Gamache’s true gameplan is revealed, and the evil that was hiding in the blind spots is exposed in this dark, slow-burning, and masterful thriller. --Vannessa Cronin

One of Publishers Weekly Booksellers' Favorite 25 Titles of the Year in 2018“Penny pulls together an insightful plot that weaves in family feuds, clandestine investigations, undercover cops and a loving look at Three Pines.” ―Oline Cogdill, South Florida Sun Sentinel“Louise Penny’s novels are unique for how seamlessly they straddle the line between charmingly small-town mysteries and big-city police procedurals . . . It’s not to be missed!” ―BookPage (Top Pick)“It’s hard to see how Louise Penny can raise the stakes any further for her iconic, fatherly good guy, Chief Inspector Armand Gamache, but somehow in each book she does.” ―News & Observer“Brain-teasing puzzles, life-and-death stakes and lots of Three Pines, a magical place where the warmth in the villagers’ hearts thaws the ice on their eyelashes.”―St. Louis Post Dispatch“Complex ongoing saga… Wait anxiously for the next installment.”―Pittsburgh Post-Gazette“Penny does a splendid job of interweaving those three main plot lines, studding them with several life-threatening scenes that had me holding my breath, and building to a wild finale.”―Tampa Bay Tribune“Nimble sleight-of-hand plotting, strong characters, profound compassion and luminous prose are hallmarks of Penny’s novels. Although darker than previous books, this new entry is no exception.”―Seattle Times “Another intricately plotted escapist mystery from Louise Penny.”―PopSugar“A Louise Penny book… is better than 90% of the books I read… Her books are about love and kindness and people who care.”―Lesa’s Book Critiques“From small puzzles do large, ever-more excellent ones grown, especially in a Louise Penny novel.”―Seattle Review of Books“Few mystery writers intertwine the personal lives of their characters with the crimes being investigated more skillfully than Penny does, and she is at her best here, as several key players face turning points in their lives, suggesting that if the past can strangle the present, it can also help clear the way for the future.”―Booklist (Starred Review)“Penny is a master at blending the modern evils affecting the big city and hidden secrets of the almost mythical village of Three Pines. Well-known characters return and new faces add richness to a narrative that will keep readers intrigued until the last page.” ―Library Journal (Starred Review)“Insightful, well-plotted… Penny offers intriguing commentary on the willful blindness that can keep people from acknowledging the secrets and lies in their own lives. Penny wraps up some continuing story lines and sends recurring characters in surprising directions.” ―Publishers Weekly“Penny reveals a deeper vulnerability in the introspective Gamache… The ending is adrenaline-filled....This starts as a small-town mystery and becomes something grander.” ―Kirkus Reviews"I thoroughly enjoyed Kingdom of the Blind. It’s always a treat to spend a few days with Armand Gamache and his latest investigation is one of my favorites." ―James Patterson

I've read every one of Louise Penny's Inspector Armand Gamache books a few times. They are so well written and I've enjoyed seeing the characters evolve. The writing is wonderful. The cases are well thought out, sometimes I can figure out where the story is going, sometimes not.In this case, one of Inspector Gamache's "second chance" individuals is expelled from the Surete Academy. Meanwhile, Gamache, Myrna and a third person, whom no one knows are named as Litigators ( executers) of a will to a woman none of them know. And so the stor(ies) begin to unfold. What I enjoy too is that the characters lives go on, if you know what I mean. Marriages, children, retirement, new jobs, etc. It's never the same story over and over again. I read the book in just a few evenings because I made myself stretch it out! hahah You don't have to read them in order, but it's more fulfilling if you do. How I wish I could stop into Oliver's Bistro in Three Pines for some chocolate and croissants! If you are not already a fan of Louise Penny, stop depriving yourself. If you are a fan - don't miss this latest entry.

Most "mystery" (by which we usually mean any Crime writing) novelists fall into one of two categories: Some are superb plotters who create weak, cardboard characters(yes, I mean Dame Agatha), while others create fine, human characters and settings but are weak in plotting. In the realm of the VERY few who do both, nowadays especially, there are 2 who rise above all others; Elizabeth George and Louise PennyThis latest from Ms Penny even begins with a plot straight out of Agatha Christie but then goes on to realms of character and, yes, even plot that would make Monsieur Poirot's mommy blushIn other words, just your basic, every day Louise Penny. Read it

Very muchlookedforwardto this new Louise penny. And while I enjoyed it...she is head and shoulders above other mystery novelists... I found it unfocused and had too many characters. If you were not already a penny fan and not already have brought along history with some of the characters I fear, from only this book, they would be flat, their personalities only a collection of tics and Schlick, and their motivations undefined. The ending was too fast tidy and pat. She needs to drop the drug sub-plot(s) whichare clunky and unconvincing. She has the insight into this world of a suburbanite driving past on a highway overpass in the backseat of a locked limousine sighing, “so sad, too bad”.When you compare this to the nuanced psychology of life in three pines or at the monestary in A Beautiful Mystery iris disappointingly superficial andLifetime movie-of-the-week-esque.

There are many reasons to love fiction, chief among them the craft of narrative. Louise Penny in her Inspector Gamache series has honed this craft to a fine edge. No spoilers here! Her latest in the series concerns a puzzling last will which names Gamache one of 3 liquidators (executors), all of whom profess no connection to or knowledge of the testator. The plot develops on several fronts, all entertaining, while Penny both introduces new compelling characters and continues the stories of those unique personalities we have learned to love from her prior books. Readers will encounter high finance, family intrigue, and the pain of difficult choices. All presented in prose deeply considered and enlightened by spirit.A reader encountering Gamache and friends for the first time in this book will still deeply enjoy the experience. Those familiar with the series will be pleased that several threads from earlier books are resolved. Being the master she is, Penny also leaves fertile ground for future plantings.

Kingdom of the BlindAuthor: Louise PennyPublisher: Minotaur Books - 2018ISBN: 978-1-250-06620-6While I own and have enjoyed each and every one of Louise Penny’s novels, I have found that they’ve improved with each book. The writing and plots get better with each edition. I look forward to each book with great anticipation and this book has fulfilled my expectations. We start off on a Canadian snowy day that becomes a roaring blizzard. The reader can feel it in his bones, while Armand Gamache heads toward a lonely, rickety farmhouse. Monsieur Gamache, recently thrust into retirement, from his position as Head of Homicide and is now the suspended Chief Superintendent of the Surete du Quebec, is unsure why he’s been called here via a letter received the previous day. Curious, he’s decided to investigate. Shortly, a friend and neighbor from his tiny village of Three Pines (not found on any map) arrives there as well, also mystified by the invitation and soon a young man, a stranger to them both, shows up too.The three people, chilled by the storm in a desolate, cold house are met by another stranger, a Notary this time, who tells them that they have been named by a woman to be liquidators of her estate. Are these people random choices or was she delusional when she wrote her will? Things can and do get worse with the discovery soon of a body. (This IS a mystery after all.)As in all books by Ms Penny, there are multiple layers of plot and intrigue. Is it a requirement that you read all her books in order to understand these? The answer is no, but it doesn’t hurt. The two books previous to The Kingdom of the Blind, and in particular Glass Houses, will increase your enjoyment and comprehension. I recommend them all, of course, and especially Kingdom of the Blind. The characters who live in Three Pines become your family and the delightful village is on the ‘bucket list’ of many readers including mine.Very highly recommended.
