I received the kindle version of this book in a Goodreads giveaway, in return for a honest review.I struggled to read this from the first chapter in the book, but recently decided to try it again and I was determined to give it a chance. What shocked me in this novel is that it is labeled as a thriller, but really there isn't much action and not a lot of surprises. The majority of the book is about a lonely rich businessman who struggles to fit in with his family. Then the last 20% of the book there is a big plot twist.I just felt that I couldn't like the main character at all. I just had an innate dislike, which I have trouble understanding, since his profession didn't bug me. Overall, I'm a little disappointed that this book wasn't what it claimed to be. However, many people seemed to enjoy it so maybe this just wasn't a genre I liked, if your interested give it a chance and if not go to something you would enjoy.

This is the first book that I've read from this author, and I was really impressed, so I'll probably check out some of his other works too! I'll start by saying that, in general, this was a very enjoyable book! The synopsis describes it as gripping and thrilling. I can agree with gripping, because I read it in one sitting and found the details and plot line intriguing enough to hold my constant attention. However there weren't any thrilling moments, as I never had that edge-of-your-seat feeling, nor was I ever speed reading to keep up with what's about to happen next (not even near the end when the pieces all come together). This story follows the life of Max, who doesn't really fit in anywhere. He has an outrageously successful yet shady career with loyal employees, but no close friendships with any of them. He's an outcast in his family, and has only had one or two mildly significant relationships. It was hard to feel anything toward this character at first, due to this level of detachment with his world. However, I ended up really enjoying his nonchalant perspective. I'm used to following either a good guy or bad guy as a main character, so it was refreshing to see someone who's morals walked the line a little, as he mainly focused on good business and strategic profit growth. The side characters were well developed and I enjoyed how they changed and interacted with Max.My one qualm is that I was annoyed by the frequent hints at romantic interests, yet nothing would seem to grow from them. I wasn't looking for a romance, but the back and fourth possibilities were tedious. That's the main reason I would have taken half a star away. It's a minor issue that I had, and I guess it's based on my personal preferences in books, as I usually like to read about a strong female influence. This was a quick read, and developed into a well thought out mystery. I'm usually good at this, but I definitely didn't predict the couple of very amusing and pleasant twists at the end, so that was a really nice surprise!! Nothing thrilling, but very entertaining! The ending is a bit vague, but there's luckily no major cliffhangers or loose ends. I think a sequel would be nice though, because I am interested in knowing how things continue to work out.I recommend this book for someone who's interested in a mystery. Keep in mind, I stand by my refusal to call this a thriller, but it was still addicting to read. While some parts are slow, I couldn't help but wonder what would happen next!

I love this book, but I honestly can't tell you why. Wignall is a fantastic stylist, but his earlier books were a bit bloody and dark. Not this one. This book gives me great hope for his future. I look forward to his next one.

One of my favorite books this year. Understated tension, and so well written. Can't wait until his next great book!

Not much ado about very little. We dwell in the protagonist’s mind most of the time, living his very uneventful life. Not much going on considering he’s a billionaire. He has a lot of great lunches on his grand estate though. He doesn’t really seem to do much to earn his wealth. Perhaps the author has no feel for business. Somewhere in here there’s a mystery and a murder but by the time we get to the end we don’t really care. Oh, and his life feels kind of empty as if earning his wealth gave him no real purpose. But in the end maybe there’s a new love interest to open up his lonely, meaningless heart. I’ll bet our hero’s next step is to go to a Tibetan monastery where his mind and heart will open up to the mysteries of the cosmos. Sorry for the sarcasm but this was pretty dull.

Before reading A FRAGILE THING, I read THE TRAITOR’S STORY and A DEATH IN SWEDEN. All three novels were good, but A FRAGILE THING was different in that I found it more realistic. A FRAGILE THING deals with a number of things, e.g., financial crimes (money laundering), Mafia, political corruption, espionage (FBI / CIA / INTERPOL), computer and cellphone hacking, lost love, sibling jealousy / rivalry etc. When I started reading A FRAGILE THING, I thought I knew the direction of the story line, but I was wrong. Instead, there’s enough twists and turns to keep the reader guessing on what’s going to happen next. As the novel ends, you’re still left wondering “what’s next.”

I loved this book till the last chapter ended but I kept looking for the next chapter-- what? This is it? What just happened? I think there were so many things left undone. The story was an awesome one and kept my attention till all of a sudden it ended. I kept thinking- "well, is that it?-- did I just read this book to end like this?" It was almost like the author felt rushed or maybe tired of his story or something. I totally feel he could come back and give us bang for our bucks with a better ending! Just saying!

I like Kevin Wignall’s writing style....his deft characterizations and (generally) his sense of plot.I read this after “Death in Sweden”, and thought “Fragile Thing” lived up to some of the other reviews that suggested this one was more realiatic and displayed more depth than Wignall’s earlier works. All true. By profiling the work and life of an investment manager for some scurrilous (if not outright dangerous) global players, Wignall raises interesting issues about the amorality —or not—of investments, as well as the impact of sibling rivalry and suspicion. This all played well until the final chapter the abruptness of which (SPOILER ALERT) suggested either a sequel or an inconveniently tight completion deadline. Either way a bit deflating. So just be forwarned a bit.
