About the Author
Marianna Crane became one of the first gerontological nurse practitioners in the early 1980s. A nurse for over forty years, she has worked in hospitals, clinics, home care, and hospice settings. She writes to educate the public about what nurses really do. Her work has appeared in The New York Times, The Eno River Literary Journal, Examined Life Journal, Hospital Drive, Stories That Need to be Told: A Tulip Tree Anthology, and Pulse: Voices from the Heart of Medicine. When I bought a copy of Marianna Crane's "Stories from the Tenth-Floor Clinic: A Nurse Practitioner Remembers," I expected to use it as a gift for a male friend just making a mid-life career switch into being a nurse practitioner after many years as an emergency room nurse. Once I started reading the book, I decided it was more appropriate for me, a 70-something female, than for the friend. The stories Ms. Crane tells are from the 1980's, but highlight some continuing issues we face as a society with a substantial proportion of poorer elderly in both urban (Ms. Crane's Chicago) and rural settings. I'd recommend it as good reading for anyone working with underserved elderly patients, whatever the setting.
The author writes from her heart about her experience as a nurse practitioner running a clinic for elderly low-income people. We see the struggles that she and her clients face, and the creative ways in which she deals with a wide range of problems. We watch her grow during this process, and see admire how she learns to cope with conflict between her family and her aging mother, who lives with them. I strongly recommend this book. I loved these stories about care for the elderly indigent patients living in Chicago Housing Authority buildings. Health care does not get better than this, more high-tech, sure but not more human or caring.
Ms. Crane tells the stories of elderly people living in a public housing hi-rise with dignity & love. She wasn't afraid to face situations most of us have never had to deal with, & brought care & comfort to a severely underserved population. I couldn't put this book down.
I loved this book - it was informative, thoughtful, heartwarming and at times humorous. I have been a nurse for many years in an acute care setting so Marianne's stories were a new experience for me. Up on the tenth floor of a twenty story building controlled by the Chicago Housing Authority (CHA), in a dilapidated one bedroom apartment, Marianna Crane initiated and operated a senior health clinic. This is back in the 1980’s when the word gerontology was still new to the medical lexicon and sounded somewhat alien to the youthful public. As a nurse practitioner familiar with senior medical problems from her past experience this intrepid health care worker undertook the daunting charge of administering basic health services to the older indigents of Chicago. This is her story of dealing with governmental red tape and of how she managed to treat the basic needs of her impoverished clients from those suffering with cardiac malfunctions, end-stage cancers, alcoholism, dementia, malnutrition, isolation, and so many other problems. These short stories familiarize the reader with the health problems that afflict the aged, vividly describe her frustrations in her attempts to assuage some of the difficulties, and details the complications wrought by bureaucratic indifference. While she copes with many of her outside patients’ problems, she admits that she is outwitted when handling her own difficult mother. This nurse practitioner’s account of her experience brings to light the still unsettling social problem of caring for the aging population. Her frequent venting of exasperation with coworkers, conditions, and administrators which hinder her intentions tend to somewhat alienate the reader from the writer.
As a family nurse practitioner, I read Stories from the Tenth-Floor Clinic with great interest. This book accurately represented everything I value about my profession--compassion, service, empathy, and making a positive difference in the lives of the underserved through advocacy.When Marianne Crane takes charge of the senior clinic in a Chicago subsidized housing building, she faces all sorts of unforeseen challenges, such as planning funerals, chasing our scam artists, protecting her clients from abusive adult children, navigating around strong-willed staff. She steps out on a limb daily to help her clients, signing social security checks, often circumventing the system while providing traditional medical care to the best of her ability. Interwoven into this narrative is the underlying strained relationship she has with her elderly mother.What comes through so clearly is her dedication to the welfare of her vulnerable clients and her commitment to providing them with the best possible care. Her writing is engaging, witty and descriptive and highlights both the plight of the frail elderly and the difference a nurse practitioner can make through compassionate listening and intervention.An accurate and engaging portrayal of the role of the nurse practitioner in advocating for the frail elderly.

She was one of the first gerontological nurse practitioners in the 1980s. A pioneer in the field!I liked that the book shows the realities of nursing: the good, bad and mundane. The more accurate representations in the media, the better. Certainly no silly stereotypes here. The author told her experiences with authenticity, dignity and respect for her elderly clients.While the realities of aging can be unpleasant at times, that doesn’t mean they don’t deserve kindness and human decency. A great addition to the literature and history about the nursing profession.
