This review is of “An Arranged Marriageâ€, book #1 in “The Company of Rogues†series by Jo Beverley. The book begins with the heroine of the book, Eleanor Chivenham, hiding in her room. Eleanor lives with her brother, Lionel, though not by choice. (After their father passed, his will left Eleanor under Lionel’s “protection†until she either turns 25-she is 23 when the book begins-or marries.) Lionel is a debauched reprobate, and for his latest act, he arranges for Eleanor to be raped by Kit Delaney, Lord Stainbridge, while both he and Eleanor were under the influence of drugs and alcohol. She is later rescued by his twin brother, Nicholas Delaney, the hero of the book.Nicholas and Eleanor get married and begin their lives together. However, Nicholas spends a great deal of time away from her, which Eleanor suspects-with the help of overheard gossip-that Nicholas has a mistress. He does, but things are not quite that cut and dried.Later, Eleanor and a friend are kidnapped and released, Eleanor has a baby-a daughter-and Nicholas goes missing for a long time. Then, he returns, and Eleanor sends him away. Nicholas returns yet again, and this time he and Eleanor make their marriage work and have their Happily Ever After.Upside: It’s a Regency romance. Beyond that, I’ve got nothing.Downside: I’ve written this many times: In order for me to like a book, tv show, movie, etc, I have to like the characters. Ms. Beverley never made me care about Eleanor, Nicholas or the supporting characters. I didn’t find either Eleanor or Nicholas to be terribly likeable. I was really pissed off that after Eleanor’s rape, none of the guilty parties receive any punishment at all. Nicholas, in fact, welcomes Kit into his home and life with Eleanor with no regard to her feelings at all. The explanation of Nicholas’ frequent absences is so convoluted I found it impossible to understand.Sex: A couple of mild love scenes, which are hardly erotic.Violence: One killing at the beginning of the book. Eleanor’s rape. A few mild assaults. None of the violence is graphic.Bottom Line: There is little to nothing I can say good about “An Arranged Marriageâ€, except that I finished it. As I told one of my friends and co-workers when speaking about it: “I paid for it, so I’m going to finish it, come hell or high water.â€
Ugh! Cannot stomach the female lead...No looks, personality, education, accomplishments and most importantly of all, NO BACKBONE! Could she be anymore pathetic? Doormat comes to mind. Why, I say?1. Allowing her evil brother into her home and meeting him...after all the years of abuse... Stupid!2. Not kicking her rapist brother-in-law to the curb and shunning him after finding out the truth of his "dirty deed". Seriously?3. Loving and staying with her misguided, cheating, "patriotic" husband (who by the way, asked her to forgive his twin for raping her) I would have stolen and sold anything that wasn't nailed down in the house and got out of Dodge ASAP!Definitely not worth reading if you expect a strong, independent, heroine with a modicum of self esteem...
I'm hooked. Jo Beverley's romance novels are exceptionally intelligent works, including significant history woven through strong and interesting plots. I love the characters as well; they are smart, sympathetic, and tough in tough times. No sighing maidens who "never felt love like this before," as the expression often goes. Love is part of life, but there is a lot that matters in this series, just like life, and therein lies the success of these stories. Someone commented that the first dramatic scene lacked realism because the heroine had no time to heal. I disagree. The situation was drastic and the heroine recognized that and acted accordingly. Well done, strong plot and characters, few endlessly graphic love scenes cluttering up the story, historically sound, dramatic and a satisfying read. Hats off to Jo Beverley!!
I first read Jo Beverley's third book in her Rogues series and meet Nicholas and Eleanor in that book and had to learn about their story. This book captured and held me close. I wanted so much for these two, and when it happened I cried happy tears. There were a few moments when I was mad, lol, but that makes it even better. I'm not the type of reviewer to talk about the story and I won't start now, I just had to say how much I enjoyed it and can't wait to read Luc and Beth's story.
Jo Beverley is one of the few authors whose books I re-read. Her clever character-building, her imaginative plots and her clean, crisp prose draw you in; even if you have read one of her books a dozen times, it is still a voyage of discovery. An Arranged Marriage is the first in her Company of Rogues series, so start here, and you will want to read them all.
