Where to begin? I always finish books, even ones I don't like, but in this case, I made an exception. I wish I knew the authors personally so that I could tell them to pull up their socks and stop inflicting their bizarre navel-gazing and introspective whining on the rest of the world.I expected this to be a book of humorous semi-scientific inquiry into the self help world in the spirit of AJ Jacobs. Instead, the authors pick a broad topic (food, sex, etc) and then spend the month undertaking weird, puerile projects. Some of the highlights: learning to solve a Rubik's cube, memorizing their credit card numbers, writing a mystery novel, learning about and buying sex toys, taking ADD drugs recreationally, getting drunk, STARTING to smoke, the list goes on.There is also the element of the author's homoerotic relationship that runs through the book. Much of the book is one author talking about the resentment they feel towards the other author. At one point they seek couples counseling. In another part of the book, one author records himself masturbating with sex toys so the other author can "see how committed to the project he is". It adds dissonance to what is already a very unevenly paced book struggling to find a theme. If these authors really want to improve I would suggest they stop being so self-obsessed and then hire a better editor.
Great idea for an experiment but a boring read and too stretched to make a point.
What, no reviews? Here's my good deed for the day: i heartily recommend this book for its curiosity, humor, and common sense. Especially in the first half there seems to be a laugh a line, but they are all revealing, not yocks for yocks' sake. Also the writers are easy-going stylists, and usually anticipate in the next sentence what you wanted to ask them.
Loved this book, insightful and honest action research, very funny as well. Can be read as critical expose but also as an empathetic look at the human condition.
Pros: - I usually have at least one or two dozen books checked out from the library at the same time but 85 percent of the time end up returning them before finishing them because I'm trying to read them all at the same time. This one was a page turner and kept me wanting to find out what the heck these crazy guys were going to do next. From that perspective, it was entertaining and interesting even if sometimes it was a "What????" kind of interesting. Like what kind of a brain comes up with the idea that starting smoking is in some way trying a self-improvement technique? Just strange. - I think one of the points they were trying to make was a criticism of the cult of self-improvement and all the BS that so many people spew to make big money in the self-improvement industry. Those are good points and they manage to make those points, through actions not just rhetoric.Cons:- I really wish I had stopped reading after the November chapter. In the December chapter they spend the whole month asking "What's it all about?" And yet they come off as clueless. I was amazed that they had learned so little from devoting a year of their lives to this. They wondered if people trying self-improvement techniques were having mid-life crises or feared death. Really? Most people just have an innate drive to get better, be better, or do better; unless they are struggling to climb up from the bottom levels of Maslow's hierarchy of needs. Benjamin Franklin was not having a mid-life crisis, fearing death, nor succumbing to a self-improvement cult when he came up with his plan to improve himself by practicing each of thirteen virtues each week. - I think one of the themes they were deliberately putting in the book was this dynamic between the two authors. At times almost a Laurel and Hardy dynamic. They wrote about their TedTalk as if Carl had planned it all out and put all this work into it and Andre had made a mess of it. Yet, if you actually go watch their actual TedTalk you see Carl comes across like a robot reciting his almost memorized lines while Andre is much more real and authentic and is not following Carl's script word for word. Two perfect Carls in that TedTalk would have been dog boring.Overall: I cannot think of any book like this one I have ever read. It is different. I'm sort of glad I read it even though when I finished it today I was so disappointed in the huge lack of insight they had after a whole year that taking it back to the library felt like taking out the trash.
This vastly entertaining memoir by two professors details their year of trying out numerous self-improvement techniques. They choose to devote one month to each major area of self-improvement (money, productivity, health, fame, sex, spirituality, etc.). During this journey, they experience mixed results and a number of hilarious snafus. Their wry and relatable observations will evoke sympathy from anyone who has ever had to sit through a company team-building exercise or listen to a lifestyle guru.
