I just finished reading Living Right. More like inhaled it, really! The tight writing and smooth pacing kept me emotionally and intellectually involved from cover to cover. As an atheist, I thought it was going to be difficult to empathize with the main character, an evangelical Christian. But even her constant prayers became a part of her character, and helped me to understand her better. I definitely connected with the universal love a mother feels for her child, and her deep commitment to loving her family and keeping them together no matter what. In that way, the author drew me right into the story. This is a beautiful, well-told story that will help people understand those who are different from them--their religion, their sexual orientation, and anything else--and how we can each challenge ourselves to open our hearts to accept those we never thought we could love.As someone who works with homeless youth, I can attest to the many LGBTQ youth who are on the streets because of family rejection. The high incidence of suicide among gay teens is also accurate. I'm so grateful that the author brought this to the attention of readers. Thank you!
I was a huge fan of Yellow Crocus and Laila skyped into our book club a while back. Not only is she such a sweet person but she has the ability to write such powerful and amazing words that captivate so many emotions when you read them. I read this book within 12 hours and could.not.put.it.down. It was wonderful. I felt sympathy for some characters, had a burning hatred for others and realized I would never ever treat my child the way these people treated josh in the beginning. All in all this is a fabulous book purchase it immediately and keep your eyes and ears out for the sequel to Yellow Crocus, I for one cannot wait!
What a sweet, heartfelt book. Too many Christians forget that Jesus said that the most important commandment is love. I never thought about how everyone breaks the Sabbath yet no one ever seems concerned or preaches about that. I also really had no idea all the evil that Anita Bryant caused. I did have to skip a lot of the repetitive stuff in the beginning of the book but the ending was well worth it.
An amazing author can make you feel things for characters and situations that aren’t really happening.I found myself hating and then pitying Jenn. I don’t know if all christians feel the way she does about homosexuality. I have no idea if pastors really do what pastor James did. But if they do, i hope this book finds its way to their hands. I felt so bad for Josh, and i felt that Steve was pretty much spineless. And jenn mas very manipulative even though she didn’t realize it. The magic lies in creating flawed characters and putting then all together. I love this about a good book. And specially the potential for growth it carries for all characters
What makes "Living Right" such an extraordinary and powerful book is the way Laila Ibrahim weaves her tale lulling us along with her descriptions of this warm and loving family. These are "good people". These are good parents making all the sacrifices for their kids all good parents make. These parent's Christian faith is the rock solid foundation for this tight knit family. Every fiber of their being is shattered when their beloved son attempts suicide due to his shame at being homosexual. This wonderful young man telling his parents “I’m so ashamed of myself. I just want to die.†Jenn’s baby boy saying “if you really knew me, you would hate me.†How could the love of this ideal family destroy their son? The author makes us ask “what is real love.†This book challenges all of our perceptions about what we believe about love. Real love is not only about accepting who we are but the perfect celebration of it. It is not found in religion or in one’s sexual orientation. It is found only in the heart. The theme is sexual orientation and conventional notions of gender but this book is bigger than that and will become timeless in its message.
This story was another example of wars fought in the name of religion. I am a Christian but believe that the Church is run by the wills of men and not Jesus. Did Jesus ever mention a church in the Bible? This was a war within a family by a narrow minded couple whom I could not relate to. I was determined to finish the book just to see how the story ended.
This is a powerful story about family, beliefs, and LOVE. Struggling with sexual orientation, attraction, or gender identity, can be a difficult and frightening experience, especially for a young adult who fears rejection from his family, friends, and faith. Laila Ibrahim is a talented author who takes us on a journey of growth and shares a lesson in what it means to love one another.
I’m so very sorry for people who have hurt over the years. 99% of this story broke my heart.Reading this story reminds me that the God I Love is a God who loves each and every one of us.In a world filled with such sadness, you have a choice to love and always be kind. â¤ï¸
