Gr. 2-5. New illustrations enliven this detailed account, first published in 1986, of Riddles' record-setting performance at the 1985 Iditarod. Riddles tells her own story: how she became interested in mushing, the training that prepared her for the event, and, finally, a day-by-day account of the extreme, grueling conditions during the race, covering over 1,000 miles of Alaska's roughest country. The text rambles in places, and the specifics of training may lose some readers. But Riddles' live-off-the-land lifestyle and unusual workout practices (chocolate and seal oil are her power foods) will intrigue young athletes and pioneer-wannabes, and her passion for her dogs and devotion to their care will draw animal lovers. Sporadic color photos mix with Cartwright's straightforward watercolors that show routes, gear, and action scenes on the trail. A welcome counterpart to Robert Blake's Akiak: A Tale from the Iditarod (1997). Gillian EngbergCopyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved

I teach 5th grade students in South Florida. Many of them have never seen snow or experienced the Alaskan experience. I purchased this book from Libby herself on a cruise ship this past summer and had her sign it to my class. I read the story to them this past week and they were absolutely enthralled! They would beg me each day to read a little bit more. They were so excited by the story of Libby's iditarod win that they want to track the 2012 Iditarod. The books is well written with an excellent combination of illustrations and REAL pictures form her experience. The kids LOVED it!

Excellent book for children especially girls. Encourages them to follow their dreams. Nicely written and beautifully illustrated. Readers aged 8 to 10.

This is a condensed version of Ms Riddles' great story of her epic adventure written for tweens and teens but by no means 'written down' for younger readers. The key parts are all there and one can vicariously enjoy the exhilarating and scary adventure.

This is an excellent book. It is simply written and details many of the problems encounterd by Libbey Riddles as she races and wins the Iditarod sled dog race in 1985. She was the first woman to win this race.

This is a great story to begin with, and I've read the adult book, "Race Across Alaska", but this beautifully illustrated children's version is a great way for the younger set to experience it's message of courage, determination, and teamwork. It's fun, exciting, and timeless. It's a real story and my grandkids especially appreciated that.

Perfect book to accompany a gift of a dogsled adventure!

As other Alaska books I purchased this also is OUTSTANDING. I have enjoyed every single one of them. Not one is better than the other.

Accurate and interesting! Great artwork. Perfect way for young children to learn more about the Iditarod!
