The only purpose I could see this book serving is to be a coffee table type book in a pediatrician's office. The print is well done and the photographs on every page are professional. The actual content in this book is completely useless only stating the obvious. For example the section that is suppose to help "de-code" the different cries babies have basically says, "every baby cries some times it is a soft cry and some times they cry hard; but eventually you will figure out why they are crying". Unless you know absolutely nothing about babies, you won't learn anything from this book. This book will not help you in learning to read cues or cries.
This book was fantastic! I have 8 younger siblings, so there's always been a baby in our house growing up. Plus I'm older now, have a son of my own, and am an EMT. So when my wife delivered our son - I got to do the delivery and cord-cutting...BASICALLY - I thought I had alot of baby experience. Until I read this book!! Wow...this book turns your world around as far as how you view newborns. It answers that ever-present and nerve-wracking question each new parent faces; that of - IF, and how, babies communicate w/ us! The personal experiences of the authors as Drs. in Pediatrics are invaluable. Just reading about the many visual and audible clues that babies constantly send out to their parents is priceless information. I have sent out at least a dozen of these books to friends and family members, and everyone of them have been thrilled. Even my Mother, the family Baby Whisperer - who has raised 11 children and still assists w/12 grandchildren... says this book is fabulous!
Fast shipping and purchased used but looks brand new for an incredible price. I'm reading this for my Postpartum Doula workshop and it's AMAZING. Props to the photographer for catching some truly heartwarming and intellectually stimulating imagines of these beautiful babes! Descriptive without being wordy. Exciting too read. Highly recommend.
While we were preparing for our baby's arrival, we spent time reading this book and contemplating what it would be like to have him in our life. After he arrived, I found that as we encountered reflex moves and other communication from our little one, we would recall what we had read in the book. It's not a particularly heavy-weight book in the sense that it's mostly photos with a small amount of text, but nonetheless, we did find it useful.
I am 29 and bought this for the first of my friends who had a kid. Even in the storm of baby gifts they got, this was singled out for praise. Even before I visited them my buddy called and told me they had it on their coffee table. It's a really beautiful book - the photos are amazing and it stands on it's own as a nice piece of art. My friend said he's read it cover to cover and it has helped him to think about and enrich his interactions with his baby. When I visited them it sparked a lot of conversation about the topic of baby communication with some older couples who have grown children. Of course, no book can give you a comprehensive guide to baby behavior (as apparently the tiny minority of people who gave 3-star reviews believed), but this book tackles this one topic in a great way. My friends love it, it's very pretty, and for the price definitely a steal!
This a beautiful book, not only the pictures, but the text, meant to help new parents understand first of all that the baby is a person, and second, what that person is communicating.
We sent Your Baby is Speaking to You to our son and his wife as soon as their son was born because we just read about it on our way back from visiting them just prior to his arrival. Otherwise we would have sent it before he arrived. It is perfect for a father who needs to know "how things work", the engineers and IT people of the world. It is perfect for the new mother who can read a few pages at a time. And best of all, it is filled with useful explanations of what you are seeing in your baby. I wish I had had this information 40 years ago. Do you know what a "fencer" position is and what that means? I just read it myself while I was visiting our new grandson and found it fascinating. I watched his every movement with new understanding and appreciation.
Shortly after my grandson was born I received this book so the timing was great. I read it and then let my daughter read it. She said she learned a lot more than she expected to even though Gabe is her second child. It has some super recipes too. After she liked it so much, I ordered another copy and gave it as a present for my step-granddaughter's parents. Very sweet book.
